I Have to Memorize MAKE and DO Expressions, But I Can’t be Bothered With Them All So Here Are A Few.
I’ve done the worksheets, I’ve attempted to memorize the list, and in the end I MAKE so many mistakes when I DO my homework. Am I doing this right?
«It does my head in!!!» – Meaning: It drives me crazy!
And those DO/MAKE lists online are a kilometer long, so I really don’t have time for that. But in a normal week, there are some basic responsibilities that come up in my everyday so let’s start with work and responsibilities!!!
If you want to make things interesting, it’s easy enough to start a good ole’ conversation about Gender Stereotypes: Who DOES the cleaning in your house and who MAKES the money? Mom, dad? Grandma, grandpa? Husband, wife? What about generational differences? Do the children help out around the house or are they too busy DOING their homework?
Which starts the easy DO category of Household Responsibilities and with that you can open up an entire fun discussion about gendered interests and responsibilities. Who DOES what?
The DO List!
Household Responsibilities
- Do the cleaning, Do the shopping
- Do the cooking, Do the washing up
- Do the laundry, Do the dishes
- Do the ironing……….(but make the bed!!)
The MAKE List!
All things seemingly BUSINESS Related
- Make money, make a list
- Make plans, make an inquiry
- Make an appointment, make a phonecall
- Make a reservation, make a fortune
- Make a speech, make time
- Make a schedule, make progress
- Make a timetable, make a decision
- Make a payment, make a profit
- Make a complaint, make a deal……….. (but do business!)
So let’s go back to that loaded question: who does the cleaning and who makes the money in your household?
And finally, the best part are the EXCEPTIONS to the rule. Many household responsibilities are DO with the exception of MAKE THE BED. Many «business and planning» related things use MAKE with one execption of DO BUSINESS!
Are these all the make and do expressions in the world? Not even close.
But what I can remember about this particular list is that whether you live with your parents, your partner, your friends, or with strangers, everyone argues about whose turn it is to do the washing up.

Y esas listas de HACER (DO/MAKE) Online son kilométricas, realmente no tengo tiempo para eso. Pero en una semana normal, tengo responsabilidades básicas que surgen en mi día a día; por lo que ¡Comencemos con el trabajo y las responsabilidades!
Si quieres hacer cosas interesantes, es bastante fácil empezar una buena conversación sobre los estereotipos de género: ¿Quién hace (DO) la limpieza en tu casa y quién GANA (MAKE) el dinero? ¿Mamá, papá? ¿Abuela, abuelo? ¿El marido, la mujer? ¿Y las diferencias generacionales? ¿Ayudan los niños en la casa o están demasiado ocupados haciendo (DO) los deberes?
Qué inicia la fácil categoría de HACER (DO) las responsabilidades domésticas y con cuál de ellas se puede abrir todo un divertido debate sobre los intereses y las responsabilidades de cada género. ¿Quién hace (DO) qué?

Y para acabar, la mejor parte son las EXCEPCIONES a la regla. Muchas de las tareas del hogar se HACE (DO) con la excepción de HACER LA CAMA (MAKE THE BED). Muchas cosas relacionadas con los «negocios y la planificación» usan HACER (MAKE) con una excepción de HACER NEGOCIOS ( DO BUSINESS)
¿Son estas todas las «make and do expressions» del mundo? Ni de lejos. Pero lo que recuerdo de esta lista en particular es que, tanto si vives con tus padres, tu pareja, tus amigos o con desconocidos, todo el mundo discute sobre a quién le toca fregar los platos (whose turn it is to do the washing up)
